Credit: Isabel Pavia \/ Getty<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooke Atkins, 36, from the Gold Coast, Queensland, welcomed her second child, Kingsley, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVERT \u2013 CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was born with a large port-wine stain (PWS) covering the right side of his face \u2013 a smooth, flat, pink, red or purple patch on a newborn that is caused by malfunctioning blood vessels in the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While often harmless, PWS on the face, especially around the eyes and forehead, can be linked to serious medical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kingsley\u2019s case, doctors diagnosed both glaucoma, which can lead to blindness, and Sturge Weber Syndrome, a rare neurological condition \u201ccharacterized by abnormal development of the small blood vessels (called capillaries) in the brain, eyes, and skin,\u201d per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/sturge-weber-syndrome\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVERT \u2013 CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The little boy has already undergone three eye surgeries and has suffered more than 100 seizures in his short life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Port-wine stains also tend to darken and thicken over time, developing a \u201ccobblestone\u201d texture with raised bumps and a risk of vascular blebs that can bleed dangerously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce a port wine stain gets to this stage, it is often very difficult to treat and laser barely has any affect, as the skin is already far too damaged,\u201d Brooke explained, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-14996123\/Mother-branded-monster-using-controversial-laser-treatment-baby-sons-birthmark-reveals-looks-like-three-years-later.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVERT \u2013 CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six months after his birth, Brooke and her partner, Kewene Wallace, 30, decided to begin Pulsed Dye Laser treatments on the mark after getting advice from specialists at Queensland Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the laser treatments is not to \u2018remove\u2019 the birthmark but instead keep the skin healthy, to prevent any further damage to the area,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over two years, Kingsley underwent six laser sessions. This wasn\u2019t for cosmetic reasons, and as parents, this was the hardest decision we have had to make,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the criticism no longer upsets her as much, the mom hopes more people will learn about the risks associated with port-wine stains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tell them that this will give him the best chance at not adding to his long list of medical issues he already has,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd if they respond rudely to that, I try my best not to tell them what I really think, but sometimes it\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVERT \u2013 CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooke\u2019s son continues to face health challenges as in June, she revealed he had multiple seizures just a month after his previous one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a mother, it broke my heart,\u201d she said. \u201cWe honestly just need a break. A break from it all.
