In 2016, two girls were born in North Carolina \u2013 Abby and Erin. They were twins, but not ordinary ones. Their heads were fused. This was something that even medicine was afraid to handle. Yet, they were born. And they survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their mother, Ann Delaney, learned about the diagnosis as early as the 11th week of pregnancy. The doctors were honest \u2013 they recommended abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term was short, but the problems ahead were enormous. Still, Ann did not want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 27 weeks, she was hospitalized, hoping to carry the pregnancy to full term. But by 30 weeks, complications arose, and the doctors had to perform an emergency cesarean section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girls were born prematurely, small, helpless, and fused together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctors said the girls had a chance \u2013 only 2% of such children survive birth and can be candidates for a separation surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incredible as it may seem, Abby and Erin were in that 2%. After months of observation, testing, and meetings, the doctors decided: the surgery could be performed. But the risks were enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, Ann signed the consent form. With any outcome. The most important thing was to try to give each daughter her own fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 6, 2017, almost a year after their birth, the operation began. It lasted 11 hours. Erin was separated first \u2013 her connection was simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Abby, the doctors fought for every millimeter of tissue, for every blood vessel. The girls survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five months later, Erin and Abby returned home. A new phase began \u2013 rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, seven years have passed since that fateful operation. Abby and Erin are alive. They are growing. But not everything was rosy. The girls were diagnosed with intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They do not speak, but they smile and enjoy playing with other children. They are socialized despite the diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erin learned to walk at the age of five. Abby can only stand for now, holding her mother\u2019s hands, but she cannot move independently. The family hopes \u2013 slowly but surely, Abby will take her first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
