Inside, the station smelled like old coffee and floor cleaner. A tired-looking officer sat at the front desk, scrolling through something on his computer. He glanced up, eyes flicking over me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her head snapped up. For half a second she looked startled, like she couldn\u2019t quite believe I was real. Then her face crumpled, and she launched herself off the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie nodded, eyes fixed on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you tell me again what happened tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie swallowed. Her voice, when it came, was small and shaky. \u201cMom said\u2026 she said I always mess up Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt her flinch as she said the word \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martinez scribbled a few notes. \u201cDid your mother say where she was going, Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She shook her head. \u201cShe just said she needed a break. That I always ruin everything. That I should be grateful she was giving me a chance not to ruin Christmas this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt a surge of anger so hot my vision blurred for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had known\u2014of course I had known\u2014that Kayla was harsh with Sophie. That she yelled too much, expected too much, punished too much. But there is a difference between knowing someone is a bad parent and hearing that they left their child on a bench in the dark because they wanted a peaceful holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cleared my throat, forcing my voice to stay steady. \u201cWhere is my sister now?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to reach her,\u201d Martinez said, her expression tightening. \u201cWe\u2019ve called the number on file several times. No answer. We\u2019ve left messages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course she wasn\u2019t answering. Kayla wasn\u2019t stupid. She knew exactly what she\u2019d done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I signed forms stating I would care for Sophie, forms acknowledging that I\u2019d been informed child services would be involved, forms that outlined exactly what time she\u2019d been found and what she\u2019d been wearing. I wrote down my address, my phone number, my employer, my relationship to Sophie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole time, she never let go of my sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we finally stepped out into the night air, I shivered so hard my teeth almost chattered. I opened the passenger door for Sophie and cranked the heat the moment I slid behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stared out the window as we drove, her reflection a pale ghost in the glass. Christmas lights winked from apartment balconies and around store windows, cheerful and indifferent. On another night, I might have appreciated how pretty it all looked. Tonight the decorations felt like a joke, a glossy picture ripped out of someone else\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou okay back there?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded without turning. \u201cMy toes are still cold,\u201d she admitted after a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll fix that,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to borrow my warmest socks. They\u2019ll be way too big and you\u2019ll look ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tiny huff of air that might have been a laugh escaped her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we got to my building, I hurried her inside, up the stairs, and into my apartment, flicking on lights as we went. The half-wrapped gifts on the floor looked absurd now, like props in a play I\u2019d once been part of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is my place,\u201d I said, suddenly conscious of the fact that she\u2019d only been here twice before. Once for a quick visit. Once when I\u2019d babysat while Kayla went to some work thing. \u201cUm. Sorry about the mess. I was in the middle of wrapping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes drifted over the scattered paper and ribbons. \u201cIt looks nice,\u201d she said politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to hug her again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said, going into autopilot. \u201cFirst, hot chocolate. Then warm clothes. Then we can talk as much or as little as you want, deal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the milk warmed on the stove, she stood in the doorway to the kitchen, watching me. There was a wariness in her posture I hadn\u2019t seen before, a tiredness that didn\u2019t belong on a child\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll risk it,\u201d I said, dropping a handful into her mug. \u201cYou\u2019ve earned at least three marshmallows tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She took the mug carefully with both hands and followed me to the couch. I wrapped a throw blanket around her shoulders, then tucked it under her legs like a cocoon. Up close, I could see the faint purple shadows under her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo,\u201d I said after a moment, keeping my voice gentle, \u201ccan you tell me why your mom thinks you \u2018ruin\u2019 Christmas?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stared into her hot chocolate, watching a marshmallow slowly melt into a white swirl. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she murmured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething must have happened,\u201d I said. \u201cDoes she say that every year?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
